To identify the best leverage points for your design, you need to explore the dynamics and dependencies between various elements of the enterprise.

In this context:

When you look for levers of change the complexity of how all the moving parts interact together quickly becomes overwhelming. You must explore structures and dynamic interactions such as the organisation, customer journeys, and business processes. You grapple with elaborate maps and inventories.

Therefore:

You arrange key elements of your Enterprise Design on a timeline of synchronous events, such as a customer journey, supply chain or internal business process. You choose a specific situation and a moment in time to focus on and you:

  • Describe that moment by combining different elements into one view:
    • Who is involved;
    • What is happening;
    • Why is this happening;
    • What needs to be in place to make this happen;
    • What is driving the actors at this given point in time;
  • Explore what happens before and after this moment and look for flow-on effects in the larger enterprise context;
  • Decide what to pay attention to, change or influence to achieve a better performing design.

Consequently:

You reduce the complexity of your design work by focusing on single moments in time. This enables you to trace the dependencies between different facets without getting overwhelmed, spot leverage points for your intervention and define success in measurable terms.
