You want the Enterprise Design to have a substantial impact on implementation and realisation. For that reason, you want to be close to the heart of change initiative portfolio management.
In this context:
Too many change initiative portfolios are incoherent and managed mainly on time and budget. There is no connection between initiatives and the strategic goals of the enterprise, so the strategic value of investing in these initiatives is unclear. Enterprise designers are rarely involved in scoping and budgeting change initiatives, which limits their impact on the enterprise’s overall landscape.
Therefore:
You become a trusted advisor of change initiative portfolio managers to help ensure the initiatives are aligned with the Enterprise Design. You provide an overview of the dependencies and keep overall enterprise complexity within bounds. Using your executive buy-in, you forge strong ties with the change initiative portfolio by:
- Using the enterprise goals to find the best changes to invest in;
- Introducing KPIs that show how each initiative contributes to these goals and increases or decreases overall enterprise complexity;
- Using your holistic view of the enterprise to help with scoping proposed changes;
- Establishing individual initiatives’ alignment with enterprise goals and enterprise strategy;
- Evaluating trade-offs and dependencies between initiatives;
- Creating roadmaps and scenarios to compare and evaluate different combinations of initiatives.
Consequently:
By contributing to the change initiative portfolio, you expand your ability to positively impact the enterprise’s evolution towards the Enterprise Design.
